West Indian Ocean Cable Company

Estimated to hold 20% of the African connectivity market, the West Indian Ocean Cable Company (WIOOC) provides end-to-end international connectivity within and around the African continent. It operates a fully integrated submarine and terrestrial fibre-optic network that extends to 55,000km of terrestrial fibre interconnecting 550 locations across Africa.

Helios Towers

As Covid-19 slowed the global economy in July 2020, Helios Towers Africa, a subsidiary of Helios Towers plc (HT) launched a bond offer on the London market. EAIF was an anchor investor in the bond and had committed up to US$60 million to the issue.

Azito Energie

In late January 2020 financial close was reached on the €330 million expansion of the Azito Energie gas-fired power station in Côte D’Ivoire. Known as Azito 4, the additional 253MW capacity being installed at the plant will bring its output up to 710MW, representing 30% of Cote D’Ivoire’s installed generating capacity.

Guinea Alumna Corporation

The Guinea Alumna Corporation (GAC) plays a central part in the economy of Guinea, which is one of Africa’s poorest nations. The company mines bauxite – a rock that is the world’s main source of aluminium. GAC is developing a new facility in Guinea that will produce 12 metric tonnes of bauxite annually. 462 new permanent jobs have been created to date. 4,384 people were employed in the construction phases of the project.

Helios Towers

Helios Towers Tanzania Ltd raised US$100 million in 2014 to acquire 1,000 telephone towers from Vodacom Tanzania Ltd. EAIF provided a US$10 million loan to the financing for refurbishment and expansion of the tower network.

Smart Energy Solutions

Smart Energy Solutions (SES) operates a fleet of mobile electricity generators. In 2014, The Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund loaned the business US$20 million to support its purchase of 40MW of new capacity and grow its business.

Gigawatt Global Rwanda Ltd

Gigawatt Global’s 8.5 MW solar PV power plant in Agahozo Shalom Youth Village, a joint venture with an orphanage, was financed, constructed and brought on stream in little more than a year.

Indorama Eleme Fertiliser and Chemicals Ltd

At Port Harcourt, the Indorama Corporation and Indorama Eleme Petrochemicals have built a US$1.2 billion complex to produce 1.4 million tonnes of nitrogenous fertiliser annually. EAIF supported the project with a US$30 million loan.

Ethiopian Airlines

EAIF supported Ethiopia’s national airline with a US$30 million loan as part of the funding package for 10 new Boeing 787 ‘Dreamliner’ aircraft. All 10 aircraft are now in service.

Kalangala Infrastructure

Kalangala is the capital of Bugala Island, the largest of the Sesese Islands on Uganda’s Lake Victoria. EAIF has loaned US$7 million to develop power and water infrastructure on the island, and to modernise land and water transport.

DPW Dakar

DP World operates 65 ports on 6 continents. Its facility at Dakar is one of the first large public/private partnerships in Senegal. EAIF supported DP World’s Dakar total investment of €216m to upgrade and expand the container terminal with a €12.5m loan.
