Water, power and transport for one of Uganda’s poorest regions

Kalangala is the capital of Bugala Island, the largest of the Sesese Islands on Uganda’s Lake Victoria. EAIF has loaned US$7 million to develop power and water infrastructure on the island, and to modernise land and water transport.

Two new car and passenger ferries have been brought into service and the island’s main 66kl road upgraded. Clean water is more accessible now that a network of solar powered water pumps has been installed. The sun also powers a 1.6MW solar farm and a 33kv distribution system delivers electricity to more people with greater dependability.

Pre-pay electricity meters have been installed in homes and businesses, which widens opportunities for enterprise whilst giving users a high degree of control over usage. Among the beneficiaries are farmers who can now invest in refrigeration to extend crop life and, with better transport links, produce can be exported from the island and new markets opened up.
